Michelle's Cancer Tonic

By Verite Reily Collins of www.after-cancer.com

Michelle Obama's visit to the Maggie's Centre, at London's Charing Cross Hospital, was a wonderful 1st Birthday present.

The centre is there for cancer patients, particularly those suffering from the side effects of cancer drugs. Patron Sarah Brown was particularly keen to show her guest what has been accomplished to help those on cancer drugs.

With all the talk of expensive drugs being allowed - or not allowed - by NICE, doctors tend to overlook the side effects of these very powerful agents. Temporary blindness, skin lesions, fatigue, joint pain - they don't happen to everyone, but enough suffer in silence. And this is where cancer centres such as Maggies come in.

Once patients have found the entrance (not the most welcoming of buildings), cancer patients are met by smiling faces. light and laughter. Michelle looked as if she were enjoying her visit, and that is what everyone feels like, even after a few minutes. One welcoming thing is very true to its Scottish foundations - there is always a cup of tea on offer, whatever the time of day. And if you are lucky, home-made biscuits or cakes too. Mrs. Obama was caught looking longingly at the chocolate birthday cake, but she was probably whisked away by her Secret Service 'tasters' before she could even try a crumb.

But once the media circus left, patients could go back to receiving support and care which they can't find on the NHS. In Germany, local authorities have to provide rooms or centres for patients to meet and listen to talks. In France every patient gets offered massages and other therapies to help them handle and overcome drug side effects - whilst in Britain all doctors at the Royal Marsden and other centres can offer is "do you want to come off the drug?" totally negating all the hard research work that has gone in to developing cancer cures.

So the NHS needs to work harder to help patients - and perhaps Mrs. Obama's high-profile visit will concentrate their minds.
